The salience of religion in France and language in the United States: a comparative analysis of institutions

In this paper, I set out to explore why religion is such a pressing issue in France while this issue is left aside in discussions about immigration policies in the United States, and, correspondingly, why the question of language is so central to the discussion of immigration and integration in the US, while barely discussed in France. How do Islam and Spanish similarly shape policies, laws, and practices in both countries? By analyzing two specific institutions—schools and the labor market— we can see how the chosen narratives of each country resonate in various policies, laws, and practices that are implemented in these institutions.
